Mindwork - Into the Swirl

The legacy of Death continues alive in the music world even tough its charismatic leader had disappeared nine years ago, and most certainly will persist for ages proving that the musical vision of Chuck Schuldiner is timeless. Incontestable proof of that is ‘Into the Swirl’ the debut album of the Czechs Mindwork, whose primal influence is the later-period of the Florida’s group career.
Although ‘Into the Swirl’ is the band’s first recording, the quartet already displays an incredible maturity in the song-writing department, and as always in a style of music so demanding as technical death-metal, the domain that these four musicians have over their instruments is faultless, the youngsters know how to play, yet they do it without excesses, without rubbing that fact in your face.
Another known characteristic of the style is the bass work, which is heavily present and close to what Steve Digiorgio have presented us in works like `Individual Thoughts Pattern', and every once in a while it denotes some jazz influences, as it occurs in themes like `Essence of Existence' and `Freedom of Mentality', two themes that even feature some small jazz interludes. The guitars and the voice of Martin Schuster also send us to the universe of Death, although aggressive and technician, the guitar work of Schuster and David Vanek has that harmony that Schuldiner and Masvidal had managed to imbue in Death and Cynic respectively.
The vociferations of Schuster are certainly reminiscent of Schuldiner circa ‘Symbolic’, they’re raspy, less guttural than usual and I even dare to say somewhat perceptible. Considering all the aspects, `Into the Swirl' is a good work that certainly will please the most eager fans of technical death-metal in the wave of Death, Cynic and Atheist, and only faults in terms of personality for being too much glued to what Chuck Schuldiner offered us all with Death. O legado dos Death continua bem vivo no mundo musical apesar do seu carismático líder ter desaparecido à 9 anos atrás, e muito possivelmente persistirá por muito tempo provando que a visão musical de Chuck Schuldiner é intemporal. Prova cabal disso é “Into the Swirl” o álbum de estreia dos Checos Mindwork, os quais foram essencialmente buscar inspiração aos trabalhos mais recentes do grupo da Florida.
Apesar de ser um álbum de estreia, o quarteto denota já uma incrível maturidade a nível de composição, e como não poderia deixar de acontecer num estilo de música tão exigente como o death-metal na sua vertente mais técnica, o domínio que estes quatro músicos têm dos seus instrumentos roça a perfeição, os rapazes sabem tocar, mas fazem-no sem excessos, sem a necessidade de esfregar na nossa cara esse facto.
Outra característica própria do estilo é o trabalho de baixo, que é bem presente assim ao estilo do que Steve Digiorgio nos presenteou em trabalhos como o ‘Individual Thoughts Pattern’, e de vez em quando denota algumas influências jazz, como acontece nos temas ‘Essence of Existence’ e ‘Freedom of Mentallity’ que apresentam inclusive pequenos interlúdios jazz.
As guitarras e a voz de Martin Schuster também remetem-nos para o universo dos Death, apesar de bem agressivo e técnico, o trabalho de guitarra de Schuster e David Vanek tem aquela harmonia que Schuldiner e Masvidal conseguiram imbuir nos Death e Cynic respectivamente.
O vociferar de Schuster é certamente reminiscente de um Schuldiner numa segunda fase da carreira dos Death, num tom ríspido e menos gutural, e diria até algo perceptível.
Considerando todos os aspectos, ‘Into the Swirl’ é um bom trabalho que certamente irá agradar ao mais ávidos fãs de death-metal técnico na onda dos Death, Cynic e Atheist, embora desfaleça um pouco em termos de personalidade por estar demasiado colado ao que Chuck Schuldiner nos brindou com os seus Death. (6.5/10)
