The Daisy Anthesis - Surface And The Sky

There’re some bands that manage to surprise me and knock down all the expectations created by external signals like the name, image, art-work, etc. Which is the case of The Daisy Anthesis, their name suggests something in the line of alternative-pop, their cover art is minimal and abstract, a vanguard thing, and the dudes have pretty normal looks, perhaps except for guitarist Scott Miller who has a nutty appearance, kind like pop-punk.
History tells that The Daisy Anthesis started out as an entirely acoustic duo, but it seems that throughout their career these fellows had lost themselves completely or had taken the wrong pills because the sound that they currently produce is everything but mellow or calm. Perhaps the best description for their sound is a mad and chaotic grind-core with some influences of jazz, and whose main references are Poland’s Anti-Gama Polish and The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza.
Those of you that aren’t fans of the style will probably have some difficulties in digesting The Daisy Anthesis with ease. After all, not all the stomachs are capable of tolerating such sonic pandemonium, even though The Daisy Anthesis on some occasions reveal some moderation and in contrast to the enraged riffs and the devilish rhythms they put forth simpler and more direct riffs, and some breakdowns to balance things. The two Scotts from the band, guitarist Miller and bassist Lilly besides sharing the same name they also divide the vocalizations of the album that go from agonizing shouts to deep and cavernous grunts.
It may not be an innovative and essential record, but `Surface And The Sky' is a good and solid work that certainly will please fans of Psyopus, The Red Chord, Anti-Gama and The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza. (6.5/10)

Existem algumas bandas que de alguma forma conseguem surpreender e derrubar por completo todas as minhas expectativas criadas através dos sinais externos como são os casos do nome, imagem, art-work, etc.
Vejam o caso dos The Daisy Anthesis, o nome sugere algo na linha do alternative-pop, a capa é minimalista e abstracta, coisa de vanguarda, e os tipos até têm boa aparência, talvez tirando o guitarrista Scott Miller que tem um ar psicopático, um estilo assim pop-punk. Segundo reza a história, os The Daisy Anthesis começaram como um duo inteiramente acústico, mas parece que ao longo do seu percurso estes rapazes perderam-se por completo ou tomaram os comprimidos errados pois o som que produzem actualmente é tudo menos calminho e meloso. Talvez a melhor descrição seja um grind-core marado e caótico com algumas influências de jazz, e cujas principais referências são os polacos Anti-Gama e os americanos The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza.
Aqueles que não são fãs do estilo provavelmente também vão ter dificuldades em digerir estes The Daisy Anthesis com facilidade. Nem todos os estômagos são capazes de tolerar tamanho frenesim sonoro, apesar dos The Daisy Anthesis de vez quando demonstrarem alguma moderação e em contraste com os riffs desenfreados e os ritmos endiabrados também debitam alguns riffs mais simples, directos e uns breakdowns para equilibrar as coisas.
Os dois Scott da banda, o guitarrista Miller e o baixista Lilly para além de partilharem o mesmo nome também dividem as vocalizações do álbum, que vão dos gritos mais agonizantes até aos grunhidos bem profundos.
Apesar de não ser um disco inovador e imprescindível, ‘Surface And The Sky’ é um bom e sólido trabalho que certamente irá agradar a fãs de Psyopus, The Red Chord, Anti-Gama e The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza. (6.5/10)
