Odium - Burning the Bridges to Nowhere

Odium is a band from my home country of Canada who are most similar to Killswitch Engage and In Flames. That statement right there should tell you everything you need to know about whether or not you will like "Burning the Bridges to Nowhere." The thing with Odium however, is that unlike the legions of bands inspired by Killswitch and In Flames, Odium actually have the chops and the tunes to put them at the top of the pack.

Straight from the get go the band shows they have they belong at the top of the metal heap with the catchy title track and then follow it up with the even better "Within the Distraction". Of particular note is vocalist Thomas Emmans, who not only does the trademark KSE "good cop, bad cop" vocals but when he actually does sing, he comes off as a dead ringer for Maynard James Keenan of Tool. I think that's really cool as with most bands who do this style it gets annoying, while in this case it's cool as the Thomas is so good.
As someone who normally doesn't care for the sea of KSE and In Flames copycats out there, I was actually really impressed by the album. I was even impressed that the band's (surprisingly good) stab at rock radio "The Descent" was left to the end of the album so as not to interrupt the flow of the album. The song is actually quite good and gives a refreshing break to all of the heaviness before it.
Overall I was quite impressed by this album and look forward to hearing more from this band. (8.5/10)

  2. I totally agree. I don't usually like the KSE style as there are a lot of bands like this nowadays, but I really liked "Burning The Bridges To Nowhere."

  3. Sounds like a million of other utterly generic bands out there.
